All the courses are designed to give students an overview of theory pertaining to the concepts they have to study, practical work and field visits

The Women’s Empowerment Course aims at providing the students a theoretical framework to women’s studies and a practical orientation to social work. Workshops on counselling, assertiveness training, self -defense are held to augment the value of the course. Visits to rural resource centres for women are arranged to familiarize the students with the various problems women in rural areas face.

The students of the women’s empowerment course can avail of books and CDs on various women’s issues and they are encouraged to make use of information and communication technology as a newer form of pedagogy for women’s studies.

Field trips are also an important part of the Cooking and Baking Course. Students are introduced to the different aspects of the baking industry by visiting biscuit factories and baking areas of hotels and bakeries. Both courses invite guest speakers to orient students to the new trends in the food industry.

The college is equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen with modern gadgets and equipment and has been upgrading the kitchen to suit the needs of the teaching faculty and students. Each student is provided with a set of kitchen gadgets. The library has purchased many books relating to the course, especially on the latest trends, like microwave cooking, which is very popular among students, and books on food preparation.

The students in all three courses complete written assignments and take written examinations for fulfilling their grade requirements. The prospectus and syllabus are available at the Sophia Centre for Women’s Studies and Development (SCWSD)
