With the global surge in the media industry over the last two decades, there has been a distinct need for an academic programme at the undergraduate level that would meet promising career opportunities in the now booming information and communication business. The Bachelors in Mass Media (BMM) programme has been designed with this very agenda – to produce professionals armed with specialized skills in either advertising or journalism. |
| |
The Department of Mass Media in Sophia College was set up in 2003, becoming the newest affiliated addition to the Arts programme of the institution. With a class strength of 60 students in each of the three years, the BMM programme offered by the college follows a rigorous semester system introducing the students to a variety of new disciplines that effectively combine theory and practical application, allowing them to approach the media from diverse perspectives.
Our focus is on consistency and excellence, and we strive to give our students a professional orientation through interactive and dynamic teaching methodologies besides encouraging them to gain on-the-job experience through summer internships. The programme is further rooted in a system of continual assessment and extensive project work in each semester. Our core philosophy is to create an environment that nurtures a spirit of critical enquiry and analysis, where young minds are able to understand the inner workings of the media even as they learn to use it as a tool with integrity and intelligence.
In addition to the course requirements, we ensure that the students have a variety of co-curricular activities to engage with. These include putting out a monthly BMM wall newspaper and running a vibrant film society that exposes them to cinema from across the world. We also organize a weekly enrichment programme that gives them the opportunity to meet and interact with professionals from different facets of the media – advertising executives, copywriters and creative directors, renowned journalists and editors, authors, theatre personalities and filmmakers. |

Students with a degree in Mass Media can pursue careers in advertising (creative, media planning, account management / client servicing, films), print, broadcast and interactive journalism, public relations, marketing, management, photography, filmmaking (feature, documentary, short), radio and television production, ad-film production. |
|
As our students move into their areas of specialization, namely advertising and journalism, their projects are expected to meet professional standards and become key components of their individual portfolios. Advertising projects typically comprise the designing of communication campaigns focusing on creative and marketing strategies, with each paper highlighting a specific aspect of the domain – brand building, targeting and segmenting consumers, media planning, visual design and copywriting among others. Students of journalism collectively write content for, edit and compile a magazine, besides identifying and researching important socio-economic issues in different localities of the city, and drafting reports, interviewing members from various sections of society, and working on an in-depth analysis of any urban sector with a focus on policy issues.
We place great importance on honing and improving our students' verbal and written communication skills, besides encouraging them to use technological tools like Powerpoint and Adobe Premier Pro to put together interactive audio-visual presentations. Their projects are submitted both in the form of papers and digital soft copies in the form of CDs. The faculty is regularly accessible to the students via e-mail to help them conceptualise their papers and revise their drafts. |
