ABOUT THE SUBJECT :

The College follows the University syllabus which introduces students to British Literature, Indian Literature in English and American Literature. The study involves the critical analysis of prescribed texts and a history of literature. The programme also includes courses in the structure of English and the study of English grammar, literary theory and practical criticism as well as feminist writing and criticism.

In addition, the department teaches Communication Skills in English at the First Year level, and Mass Communication at the SYBA level.
 
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT :

The English Department was one of the first departments to be established when the College was set up in 1940. The maximum possible is two divisions, i.e.240 students. The average each year is about 130-140.

Members of the department have guided EXAP students for the Seminar, Research and Cultural components. On topics like Theatre of the Absurd, The Crusades, Fortune-telling, Diasporic Writing, A Comparative Analysis of the Representation of Women in post-Eighteenth Century Indian Paintings and Contemporary Indian Paintings.

The Cultural component topics were Rangoli, Rajasthani Textiles and Jewellery, Superheroes: Men and Women in Tights.
 
ABOUT THE FACULTY :
Dr. Shireen Vakil :
Dr. Shireen Vakil is Head of the Department of English. Her area of specialization is Modern British Poetry. She is also co-ordinator of the Excellence in Arts Programme.
 
Dr. (Sr.) A. Amritmahal :
Sr. Ananda Amritmahal's area of special interest is Women's Writing and Feminist Literary Criticism. She is also co-ordinator of the Sophia Centre for Women's Studies and Development, and Dean of the Sophia College Hostel.
 
Ms Jaya Kanoria :
Ms Jaya Kanoria is specially interested in Post-Colonial Literature, both in English and in Hindi
 
Ms Jihasa Vachharajani :
Ms Jihasa Vachharajani is particularly interested in Early Modern English Literature and Travel Writing.

RESEARCH :
Students :

Members of the English department have been guiding students in seminar, cultural and research components for EXAP, from the very inception of the programme. Further, students have been guided for research in collection of oral narratives, in compiling home remedies for a variety of ailments (the findings were presented in a booklet named Grandma's Home Remedies), in researching the use of water in a number of religious traditions and rituals (the findings were presented in a poster exhibition).

The Department has also organized several student seminars at the intra- and inter-collegiate levels on subjects like Existentialism, Partition Literature, Women's Voices in Contemporary British Literature.

Faculty :

•  Dr. Shireen Vakil has done original work for her doctoral thesis on “The Woman Figure in the Poetry of Seamus Heaney.”

•  Dr. Vakil has also presented a paper on “A Postcolonial Reading of Robinson Crusoe at Ruia College .

• Dr. (Sr.) Ananda Amritmahal’s doctoral thesis was “A Feminist Critical Perspective on the Work of Shashi Deshpande and Mahasweta Devi” .

•  She has also worked on “The Representation of Women in Kiran Nagarkar's Cuckold as well as on the epistemological and methodological foundations of Women's Studies (“New Wineskins: Women's Studies Today” , “A Shift in Perspective: Epistemology and Pedagogy in Women's Studies” and “Rethinking the Canon: The Interface between Women's Studies and Established Systems of Knowledge”)

•  Another area of interest for Sr. Ananda is feminist re-readings of myth and scripture, and feminist spirituality and theology. She is frequently invited as a resource person to speak on these topics.

•  Further, Dr. Vakil and Sr. Amritmahal collaborated on a research project entitled “A Comparative Study of Some Indian and European Women Mystic Poets (Hildegard of Bingen, Julian of Norwich, Janabai and Mirabai)” They have presented papers on aspects of this topic as resource persons at various academic programmes.

•  Ms Jihasa Vachharajani's M. Phil dissertation was on “Spectacles of Difference: Early Modern English Drama, Travel and Mercantile Writing”

  Ms. Rupoo Srivastava, MA, BEd
She joined the Sophia College in 2004, and has 5 years experience in teachingstudents from diverse background. She lays emphasis on teaching students both the written and the spoken word.
