SOPHIA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN is a grant-in-aid, primarily undergraduate institution, affiliated to the UNIVERSITY OF MUMBAI. It has been accredited by NAAC (The National Assessment And Accreditation Council) with an “A” grade.
A Christian minority institution, it is run by the Society for the Higher Education of Women in India (SHEWI), a trust belonging to the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The college is part of an international network of Sacred Heart schools and colleges, which share a 200-year old philosophy of education that was promoted by a visionary educationist, Madeleine Sophie Barat, who founded the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1800. Sophia College is a women’s college. However, male students are admitted to the post-graduate programmes of the college and the certificate courses of the Sophia Centre for Women’s Studies and Development.

Under Article 30(1) of the Constitution of India, the college is primarily for Christian minority students, but it admits everyone without discrimination, on the basis of merit and other legal provisions.

From its inception in 1941, the mission of the college has always been commitment to women’s education, which is perceived to be the means for both personal and societal transformation. The mission is the upliftment of women through an education that is holistic and provides for an all-round growth. The College management is committed to creating an atmosphere in which the zest for learning thrives and students are trained not only academically but also to be women of convictions and values. All programmes are student-centred, providing ample opportunity for the development of leadership and self-assurance.

The goals of the college are revised periodically in order to keep pace with changing needs. Within the framework of the goals of the college, a unique feature of the institution is that a different theme is chosen each year. Various activities, departmental, interdepartmental and intercollegiate in nature, are organized around this theme, in collaboration with the Sophia Centre for Women’s Studies and Development. These activities include seminars, symposia, discussions and minor research studies on the chosen theme for the academic year. At the end of the year, ANANYA, an intercollegiate event focusing on the theme, is held. Other innovative academic activities are carried out under the Excellence Programmes of the college. The Education to Excellence in Arts Programme (EXAP) and the Education to Excellence in Science Programme (EXSP) aim to provide gifted students with the opportunity to go beyond the syllabus. The cultural dimension of the College is reflected in the prestigious intercollegiate festival, KALEIDOSCOPE, which is a very popular event among students of city and suburban colleges.

The College is fortunate in having a highly qualified and motivated teaching faculty, many of whom are actively engaged either in research work or in extension activities. Sophia College, during the past few years, has received special grants from the University Grants Commission as well as the Ministry of Science and Technology and other agencies. The committed faculty and the additional grants for academic activities have enabled the college to meet effectively the new challenges faced by education today.

The Sophia Campus has excellent infrastructural facilities and is always alive with activity-academic, co-curricular, extra-curricular and sports. Our students are expected to participate actively and to take advantage of the many opportunities offered, so that they can develop into self-confident, responsible, ethical and compassionate human beings.
