The postgraduate Diploma Course in ‘Quality Assurance in the Foods, Pharmaceuticals and Allied Industries' at Sophia College for Women (Empowered Autonomous)
Course Overview:
Launched in 1993 as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Sophia College for Women, the one-and-a-half-year Postgraduate Diploma in Quality Assurance (QA) was initially conceived with a focus on the Food Industry. Recognising the expanding need for quality professionals across sectors, the course was subsequently broadened to include the Pharmaceuticals Industry and later other Allied Industries. This evolution has allowed the course to offer students wider career opportunities while staying responsive to industry demand. Today, Quality Assurance is recognised as a critical function in practically every industry, and the demand for skilled QA professionals continues to grow.
Admissions and Student Profile
The course is distinguished by its inclusive approach to admissions. Rather than relying on a cut-off percentage, students are selected through an entrance test, group discussion and personal interview - a process designed to assess aptitude, potential and student motivation rather than academic scores alone. This has resulted in a diverse student community comprising science graduates, both men and women, drawn from colleges across India

This approach ensures that students develop both theoretical understanding and practical competence over the duration of the course. Additionally, each student's internship performance is assessed and graded directly by the host industry, lending a real-world performance-based dimension to their academic evaluation.
Holistic Development
The course takes a deliberately broad view of education, emphasising the all-round development of students alongside technical training. Structured activities are organised to build soft skills, strengthen communication skills, and enhance personality and confidence. Students are encouraged to develop creativity, physical fitness, teamwork skills and event management capabilities, while being instilled with a sense of social responsibility, environmental awareness, patriotism and civic pride.
Industry Links and Support
The sustained relevance of the course is largely attributable to its close and continuous collaboration with industry. Industry experts contribute actively to curriculum updates, ensuring that the content remains aligned with current industry standards and practices.
Industry support has been both foundational and ongoing. Initial seed funding was provided in 1993 to establish the course, followed by additional funding in 2007 that enabled the creation of the Sophia College - Geeta Israni Centre of Quality Assurance. Ongoing Industry support continues in the form of laboratory upgrades, library and ICT infrastructure development and other course requirements.
Industry connections extend into the academic experience of students. Training is provided by industry and quality experts through guest sessions. Students are taken on visits to Food, Pharmaceutical, and Allied Industry facilities across various Indian states.
A comprehensive one-month Public Testing Laboratory (PTL) training program is compulsory, during which students spend one month training in different laboratories.
Internships constitute a critical aspect of the curriculum. Each student undertakes two internships of two months’ duration, one in a food and the other in a pharmaceutical/allied industry. These internships provide hands-on experience and strengthen industry readiness.
Alumni of the course, who hold senior positions in various industries, play a valuable role in supporting these initiatives, contributing to training, industry connections and mentorship.
The relevance of the course is widely acknowledged by industry and professional bodies. Industries and organisations such as the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (AFST) sponsor prizes and awards for meritorious students

The course maintains strong placement outcomes, with virtually every student securing employment upon completion.
Alumni of the course hold senior positions in fields spanning Quality Assurance, Research and Development, Production, Quality Audits, Regulatory Affairs, Intellectual Property Rights, and Marketing in both national and international organisations demonstrating the strength and relevance of the course.
